Introduction

Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) are one of five species of great apes including chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and humans, and are the only great ape living in Asia. Although more recently the orangutan has been studied more extensively they have been largely neglected as a species in the past compared to the other great apes. This species has long been noted for their long striking red hair as well as for being the world’s largest arboreal mammal and more recently have also become noted as a highly endangered species. However, there is much much more to this complex and intelligent species that inhabit the tropical rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia.
