Help BOS Canada support Orangutans in Borneo

Riak Bumi is an Indonesian organization, founded in 2000 by people in West Kalimantan to protect the wildlife and the unique ecosystem of their Danau Sentarum region. The region recently gained National Park status, and orangutans are among the wildlife it supports and protects. It lies near the headwaters of the Kapuas, one of Borneo’s two largest rivers, far in the interior of West Kalimantan near the Sarawak border.

The Danu Sentarum ecosystem is important for its orangutans, its unique animal and plant life, and its function as a floodplain for the Kapuas River. It is also important for humans, as a major source of fish in W. Kalimantan, for instance. That makes it critical to manage the Danau Sentarum region so that its ecology and ecosystem are not damaged while it continues to support the region’s economy. YRB’s vision and mission are to ensure that TNDS is cared for and protected accordingly.

Riak Bumi recently surveyed the orangutans in Danau Sentarum, following up from an earlier survey in 1996, because logging activities have damaged their habitat since then. Based on their results and consultation with the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project in Sabah, they plan to establish regular orangutan monitoring based on KOCP’s very effective model. Plans for the first year are to survey the orangutan population systematically to estimate current numbers, range and habitat preferences, behavior, and foods.

BOS Canada aims to support this orangutan monitoring system

Our goal is to raise $2500, to cover 3 months’ monitoring

Your contribution of $10, $25, $50 or whatever you can give will help ensure the protection of these orangutans.
