BOS CANADA Conservation Grants 2010

BOS Canada has a fund of $5,000 CAD, in 2010, to provide small grants in support of conservation research on orangutans or related projects, including conservation education. Award amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 CAD.

Application Deadline: 1 April, 2010

Eligibility:

Professional and university student researchers working in orangutan habitat countries are encouraged to apply or to help someone from a habitat country to submit a proposal.

BOS Canada funds granted cannot be used for expenses incurred before the date on which the funds are awarded. Grant recipients must agree to submit a brief report (maximum 1-2 pages, single spaced) in a form suitable for publication in the BOS Canada website and newsletter, to the BOS Canada Grants Committee within 6 months of completing the project.

2 Award decisions will be made by late April 2010

3 Funds awarded will be available by early May, 2010

Completing an Application:

I. COVER PAGE (use application form)

1. Principal Investigator: identify one, as grant recipient responsible for the funds.

II. ABSTRACT (200 words; to be included in 4 page application, see section III)

III. PROJECT NARRATIVE: (max 4 pages single spaced, 12 pt font, including abstract and literature cited). Fit narrative in boxes provided; approx, max. word count noted below.

1. Introduction

    a. Background and Significance (300 words)
    b. Specific Goals (explain orangutan conservation contribution) (150 words)

2. Methods

    a. Study Site (100 words)
    b. Subjects (100 words)
    c. Procedure

      i Data Collection (150 words)
      ii Data Analysis (150 words)
      iii Animal Handling (describe and justify procedures involving immobilization/capture/tissue collection of live animals; technical level) (100 words)

3. Education/Awareness (if applicable) (100 words)

4. Time Table (outline the dates of project activities from start to completion)

5. Project significance to orangutan conservation (100 words)

6. Literature Cited (10 pt font acceptable for this section only)

IV. PROJECT BUDGET and JUSTIFICATION: (max. 1 page)

1. Budget (outline major project expenses, e.g., travel/transportation, room, meals, field assistants, equipment, supplies, etc.)

2. Justification (provide a brief statement justifying each proposed budget item)

    a. If the project budget exceeds the amount requested from BOS Canada:
    indicate the item(s) to be funded by the BOS-CAN Conservation Grant
    indicate how remaining expenses will be covered (i.e., other funding sources)

V. CURRICULUM VITAE OF PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: (maximum 2 pages)

1. Include information such as educational background, current position, relevant experience, presentations and publications, names and addresses of two references.

2. Do not submit CV’s of co-investigators.

VI. LETTER OF REFERENCE

1. Include one letter of reference. Students should ask their academic supervisor to write the letter of reference, and nonstudents should supply a letter written by someone from their sponsoring institution.
